2010-2011 REGIONAL GUIDELINES 2010-11 Regional Guidelines
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 30 Days* in advance of event ALL Official DEA Competition & Workshop forms MUST be submitted using the Online registration system. *Entries received after 30 days will be assessed a late fee of 10% on all balances and risk not being listed in the program. No TBA. Please ensure accuracy of age & spelling of names and music.
FORMS OF PAYMENT: Payment must be made using the Online checkout system. Registrations received via fax are payable by Credit Card (all payments must be in U.S. Funds) at the time of submission. We accept Visa, MC, Discover & American Express. DEA reserves the right to approve all payment arrangements. All billing issues must be resolved prior to the competition.
REFUND POLICY: ALL competition & workshop fees are NON-REFUNDABLE. Any credits due will be solely issued by the DEA Office.
ADMISSION: Admission is free to view competition. Sportsmanlike behavior is expected at all times.
LOSS & INJURY: Dance Educators of America and the housing facility are not responsible for personal injury or property loss.
COMPETITION ONLY EVENTS: A (1) day Regional competition
which does not offer workshop classes. All other rules apply.
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS: A copy of the certificate MUST be included at the time of registration. All scholarships are valid for 2010-11 season only, non-transferable to other students and may not be exchanged for cash value. Lost certificates will not be re-issued.
DANCE CATEGORIES:
Jazz: Consists of Classic Jazz technique
Tap: No Tap sounds on tape or CD
Ballet: Movements and steps showing Ballet technique
Pointe: Showing Pointe technique
Theatre Dance: A Broadway Show or Movie Musical dance
Modern/Lyrical: Interpreting the Music, Jazz & Ballet technique
Acro/Tumbling: Routine consisting of 75% tricks and 25% dance
Hip Hop: Routine consisting of street, funk & urban style Jazz
Contemporary: Ballet and Modern technique
Specialty: A routine with props
Character: Any national or folk dance (ie: Mazurka, Polka, Schottische)
Ethnic: Dance deriving from another culture (ie: Hawaiian, Filipino, East Indian)
Flamenco: Consists of Spanish dance with castanets etc…
COMPETITION DIVISIONS:
Age: Small Fry (6-8), Junior (9-10), Pre-Teen (11-12), Teen (13-15), Senior (16-19), Adult (19+), Professional.
General: Solo, Duet, Trio, Group (4-8), Line (9+), Small Production (4-9), Mid-Production (10-15), Large Production (16+).
Dance: Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Pointe, Acro, Lyrical, Modern, Character, Contemporary, Ethnic, Flamenco, Hip Hop, Specialty, Theatre Dance, Pom Pon, Line Precision
AGE CALCULATION: The average age of all students in a routine; drop the decimal. The age of student(s) at Regional will remain the same at National. Group entries cannot compete in more than one age division, must remain in original age division.
GENERAL INFO: Judges Score Sheets, critique tapes & all performance music must be picked up at the event. Any uncollected materials will not be returned.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: In order to participate in competition, Teachers along with competing students MUST be registered for workshop (as scheduled). Workshop attendance is accepted exclusive of competition. Independents are welcome. Dancers may compete in more than one Regional city, but a “winning routine” may not compete again once qualified.
• Owner/Teacher(s) or Salaried Employees: All entries must be submitted as Semi-Professional-No exceptions. Such persons are not eligible for cash awards or “High Score of the Day”. Winners will be awarded a trophy.
• Advanced Students (16-22): Participating in Teachers’ classes disqualifies said students for any cash prizes, scholarships or Title competition.
• Class Demonstrators at Studio: These students are not considered to be ‘Professional’ and may compete in any category.
• Novice Students: Students taking class 3 hours or less a week are eligible to enter as a novice and will be awarded a medal, but no cash awards. A novice may only participate in a routine categorized as novice with novice participants.
ENTRY CLASSIFICATION: A student may not compete against oneself in any given division of competition. All routines are permitted to enter into only one (1) General division and one (1) Dance division of the same age category.
Wrong Example: Teen Solo Ballet...Jane Doe Teen Solo Ballet...Jane Doe
Correct Example: Teen Solo Ballet...Jane Doe Teen Solo Lyrical...Jane Doe
NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY: Scores of Silver and above are eligible to participate at Nationals.
REGIONAL DISCOUNTS: Discounts applicable to balances at the time of initial Registration only. All fees MUST be paid prior to event for discounts to apply. Discounts exclude Scholarships & Small Fry students.
1. *Bring 20 paying students JR-SR, receive 5% discount off total cost of competition & workshop fees.
2. *Bring 21-30 students JR-SR, receive 10% discount off total cost of competition & workshop fees.
3. *Bring 31-50 students JR-SR, receive 15% discount off total cost of competition & workshop fees
FLASH PHOTOS OR VIDEO: Taping of the competition is strictly prohibited and will result in disqualification. Each studio will receive a DVD containing
video and judges comments. Teachers solely are permitted to videotape during workshop classes only.
PROPS: All props must be set on stage by the studio (not by DEA staff) within (45) seconds maximum or a 3-point deduction will be applied. Please have clean up after removal.
TIME & PROGRAM: Students with make up or costume changes that require additional time to prepare between performances MUST note this change on the entry form. Once the program has been issued 7 days before competition date NO CHANGES will be allowed.
TEACHER LINE UP: Upon release of an event program, all Participating Teachers will receive a Studio Line up and supporting information via e-mail or postal mail.Teachers are asked to confirm the line up for accuracy prior to the event. Non-confirmation of a line up is interpreted as correct and will peform as is.
MUSIC: One song per CD. Back ups must also be a CD, clearly labeled and of professional quality. Entries are timed from 1st step onstage to finish pose. Teachers must use judgment when selecting music and its lyrical content. Vulgar, derogatory or sexually suggestive words and inappropriate dance moves are cause for disqualification.
TIME LIMITS:
(2 Point Deduction will Result For Every 5 Seconds of Overtime)
Solo- 2 min. 45 seconds
Duet- 2 min. 45 seconds
Trio- 2 min. 45 seconds
Group- 3 minutes
Line- 3 minutes
Small Production- 5 minutes
Mid-Production- 5 minutes
Large Production- 5 - 8 minutes
SCORING: The DEA Standard of Achievement of composite scores is an average of the individual Judges scores resulting in the following award categories:
Platinum 294 - 300 -|- Gold 282 - 293 -|- Silver 264 - 281 -|- Bronze 246 - 263 -|- Honorable Mention 210 - 245
AWARDS:
Solos, Duets, and Trios in each age category will be awarded medals. Awards for TOP 3 Solos, Duets and Trios will receive trophies.
The Overall Highest Score (Platinum or Gold) will receive a full scholarship to a 2011 National Workshop.
Groups, Lines, and Productions in each age division will be awarded (1) medal for the routine and ribbons to all participants.
Groups & Lines in each age division will be awarded trophies to the TOP 3. The first place (Platinum or Gold) winner will receive a cash award.
Productions “12 and Under” & “13 and Over” age categories will receive
trophies and the Highest Overall score in each will receive a cash prize.
