2012 NATIONALS | GUIDELINES 2012 National Guidelines
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: MAY 18, 2012. All studios must register online at www.deadance.com . Competition & Workshop forms must be inclusive at the time of submission. Registration will not be processed without valid payment.
LATE FEE: Registration received after May 18th is subject to a late fee charge of $50.00.
FORMS OF PAYMENT: Payment must be made using the Online checkout system. Registrations received via fax are payable by Credit Card (all payments must be in U.S. Funds) DEA reserves the right to approve all payment arrangements. All billing issues must be resolved prior to the competition. We accept Visa, MC, Discover & American Express. IMPORTANT: Effective immediately, there will be a 6% service charge for any American Express transactions. Also, please note that a $100.00 fee will be applied towards returned checks due to insufficient funds, plus any other applicable bank fees.
REFUND POLICY: ALL FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE.
CONFIRMATIONS: DEA will e-mail each participating school their own line-up (Not in order of final program)
PRELIMINARY: A preliminary competition will be held for those who were not able to attend a regional event. Any routine requiring qualification must be registered by May 18, 2012.
PRELIMINARY FEES: The 2012 National Fee schedule for Finals is also applicable to all Preliminary entries.
PLATINUM AND TITANIUM COMPETITION: Advance Registration is due by May 18, 2012 for Regional Qualifiers. Participation is voluntary.
NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY: Scores of Silver, Gold, Platinum and Titanium at the Regional level are eligible to participate at Nationals. No student may compete against themselves within a division.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: In 2012, Teachers (Member or Non-Member) are not required to be present for their students to participate at any nationals, however, students are required to be registered for workshops. Independents are welcome.
- Owner/Teacher(s) or Salaried Employees: Are allowed to participate in competition as long as they are registered as Semi-Professionals.
- Advanced Students (16-21): Participating in Teachers' classes disqualifies said students for any cash prizes, scholarships or Title competition.
- Novice Students: Students taking class 3 hours or less a week are eligible to enter as a novice and will be awarded a medal, but no cash awards.
COMPETITION CATEGORIES: Each National Entry must be entered into one of the following application types on the Online Registration Center:
- Preliminary & Final
- Final Only
- Final Platinum and Titanium
- Platinum Only
- Titanium Only
- Title
AGE : The average age of all students in a routine; drop the decimal. As of January 1, 2012, the average age at regional will remain the same at national.
COMPETITION DIVISIONS:
- Age: Small Fry (8 & under), Junior (9-10), Pre-Teen (11-12), Teen (13-15), Senior (16-21), Adult (22+), Semi-Professional
- General: Solo, Duet, Trio, Group (4-8), Line (9+), Small Production (4-9), Mid-Production (10-15), Large Production (16+) & Title (See Title Guidelines for National eligibility rules and regulations.)
- Dance: Jazz, Tap, Ballet, Pointe, Acro, Lyrical, Modern, Character, Contemporary, Ethnic, Flamenco, Hip Hop, Specialty, Theatre Dance, Pom Pon, Line Precision
DANCE CATEGORIES:
- Jazz: Consists of Classic Jazz Technique
- Tap: No Tap sounds on tape or CD
- Ballet: Movements and steps showing Ballet technique
- Pointe: Showing Pointe technique
- Theatre Dance: A Broadway Show or Movie Musical dance
- Modern/Lyrical: Consists of Jazz, Ballet and Modern Technique
- Acro/Tumbling: Routine consisting of 75% tricks and 25% dance
- Hip Hop: Routine consisting of street, funk & urban style Jazz
- Contemporary: Ballet and Modern technique
- Speciality: A routine with props
- Character: Any national or folk dance (i.e.: Mazurka, Polka, Schottische)
- Ethnic :Dance deriving from another culture (i.e.: Hawaiian, Filipino, East Indian)
- Flamenco: Consists of Spanish dance with castanets etc…
WORKSHOP DIVISIONS: Teachers are permitted to attend student workshops. Teachers will not be permitted in the Small Fry classroom at anytime, however, one parent, per studio, will be allowed. Each paid workshop participant will receive one (1) banquet ticket including Small Fry students. Workshop Scholarship recipients excluded. Banquet tickets and Lunch vouchers will be available for sale to the general public.

SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS: A copy of the certificate must be attached to registration form, scanned workshop certificates will be accepted via e-mail, as well as fax or postal mail. All scholarships which are valid for the 2011-2012 season are non-transferable to other events or students and may not be exchanged for cash value. Duplicates will not be re-issued (See details on Scholarship).
NATIONAL DISCOUNTS: Fees must be paid in full on or before May 18, 2012 to receive applicable discounts. Discounts not applicable to Small Fry students and/or Workshop Scholarship students.

WORKSHOP WRISTBANDS: ALL participants must wear designated bracelet for the duration of workshop classes. No entry will be permitted to anyone without the necessary bracelet for the classroom. Lost or damaged wristbands will be replaced for $5.00.
TIME LIMITS: A 2 point deduction will result for every 5 seconds of overtime.

- Trio 2 minutes 45 seconds

- Small Production 5 minutes
- Mid-Production 5 minutes
- Large Production 5-8 minutes
MUSIC: One song per CD. Back ups must also be a CD, clearly labeled and of professional quality. Entries are timed from 1st step onstage to finish pose. Teachers must use judgment when selecting music and its lyrical content. Vulgar, derogatory or sexually suggestive words and inappropriate dance moves are cause for disqualification.
TIME & LINE UP: Students with makeup or costume changes that require additional time to prepare between performances must note this change on the entry form. Once the line up has been issued NO CHANGES WILL BE ALLOWED
PROPS: All props must be set on stage by the studio within (45) seconds maximum or a 3-point deduction will be applied. Please have clean up after prop removal. DEA staff is not responsible for set-up or breakdown.
SCORING: The DEA Standard of Achievement of composite scores is an average of the individual Judges scores resulting in the following award categories:
- Titanium 298-300
- Platinum 294-297
- Gold 282-293
- Silver 264-281
- Bronze 246-263
AWARDS:
- Solos, Duets and Trios: Each age division will be awarded medals. Awards for TOP 3 Solos, Duets and Trios will be announced and awarded cash prizes at Banquet. There must be 6 entries in a category to be awarded 3 places for cash awards.
- Groups & Lines: Each age division will be announced & awarded (1) medal for the routine and ribbons to all participants. The TOP 3 Groups & Lines will be announced and awarded cash prizes at Banquet. There must be 6 entries in a category to be awarded 3 places for cash awards.
- Productions: Each age division will be announced & awarded (1) medal for the routine and ribbons to all participants. The TOP 3 in '12 & Under' and '13 & Over' will be announced and awarded a trophy plus cash prizes at banquet. There must be 6 entries in a category to be awarded 3 places for cash awards.
FLASH PHOTOS OR VIDEO: Taping of National competition is strictly prohibited and will result in disqualification. Each studio will receive a DVD containing video footage of entries and judges' comments. Teachers only will be permitted to video during workshop.
Dance Educators of America staff, faculty members, and the housing facility are not responsible for personal injury or property loss.
