2011-2012 REGIONALS | Guidelines 2011-12 Regional Guidelines
REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 30 Days* in advance of event ALL Official DEA Competition & Workshop forms MUST be submitted using the Online registration system. * Entries received after 30 days will be assessed a late fee of 10% on all balances and risk not being listed in the program. No TBA. Please ensure accuracy of age & spelling of names and music.
FORMS OF PAYMENT: Payment must be made using the Online checkout system. Registrations received via fax are payable by Credit Card (all payments must be in U.S. Funds) DEA reserves the right to approve all payment arrangements. All billing issues must be resolved prior to the competition. We accept Visa, MC, Discover & American Express. IMPORTANT: Effective immediately, there will be a 6% service charge for any American Express transactions. Also, please note that a $100.00 fee will be applied towards returned checks due to insufficient funds, plus any other applicable bank fees.
REFUND POLICY: ALL competition & workshop fees are NON-REFUNDABLE. Any credits due will be solely issued by the DEA Office.
ADMISSION: Admission is free to view competition. Sportsmanlike behavior is expected at all times
LOSS & INJURY: Dance Educators of America, Staff, Faculty and the housing facility are not responsible for personal injury or property loss.
COMPETITION DIVISIONS:
- Age: Small Fry (8 & under), Junior (9-10), Pre-Teen (11-12), Teen (13-15), Senior (16-21), Adult (22+), Semi-Professional
- General: Solo, Duet, Trio, Group (4-8), Line (9+), Small Production (4-9), Mid-Production (10-15), Large Production (16+)
AGE CALCULATION: The average age of all students in a routine; drop the decimal. The age of student(s) at Regional will remain the same at National. Group entries cannot compete in more than one age division and must remain in the same age division. As of January 1, 2012, the average age at regional will remain the same at national.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: In order to participate in competition, Teachers along with competing students must be registered for workshop (as scheduled). Workshop attendance is accepted exclusive of competition. Independents are welcome. Dancers may compete in more than one Regional city, but a "winning routine" may not compete again once qualified.
- Owner/Teacher(s) or Salaried Employees: All entries must be submitted as Semi-Professional - No exceptions. Such persons are not eligible for cash awards or "High Score of the Day". Winners will be awarded a trophy.
- Advanced Students (16-21): Participating in Teachers' classes disqualifies said students for any cash prizes, scholarships or Title competition.
- Novice Students: Taking classes of 3 hours or less a week are eligible to enter as a novice and will be awarded a medal, but no cash awards.
NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY: Scores of Silver and above are eligible to participate at Nationals.
GENERAL INFO: Judges score sheets, critique tapes and all performance music must be picked up at the event. Any uncollected materials will not be returned.
REGIONAL DISCOUNTS: Discounts applicable to balances at the time of initial Registration only.
All fees MUST be paid prior to event for discounts to apply. Discounts exclude Scholarships & Small Fry students.
- Bring 20 paying students (JR-SR), receive 5% discount off total cost of competition & workshop fees.
- Bring 21-30 students (JR-SR), receive 10% discount off total cost of competition & workshop fees.
- Bring 31-50 students (JR-SR), receive 15% discount off total cost of competition & workshop fees.
- Bring 51-75 students (JR-SR), receive 20% discount of total cost of competition & workshop fees.
- Bring 76-100 students (JR-SR), receive 25% discount of total cost of competition & workshop fees.
SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS: A copy of the certificate must be included at the time of registration. All scholarships are valid for 2011-12 competition season only, are non-transferable to other students and may not be exchanged for cash. Lost certificates will not be re-issued.
DANCE CATEGORIES:
- Ballet: Movements and steps showing Ballet technique
- Tap: No Tap sounds on tape or CD
- Jazz: Consists of Classic Jazz Technique
- Pointe: Showing Pointe technique
- Theatre Dance: A Broadway Show or Movie Musical dance
- Modern/Lyrical: Consists of, Jazz , Ballet and Modern technique
- Acro/Tumbling: Routine consisting of 75% tricks and 25% dance
- Hip Hop: Routine consisting of street, funk & urban style Jazz
- Contemporary: Ballet and Modern technique
- Speciality: A routine with props
- Character: Any national or folk dance (i.e.: Mazurka, Polka, Schottische)
- Ethnic: Dance deriving from another culture (i.e.: Hawaiian, Filipino, East Indian)
- Flamenco Consists of Spanish dance with castanets etc…
FLASH PHOTOS OR VIDEO: Taping of the competition is strictly prohibited and will result in disqualification. Each studio will receive a DVD containing video and judges comments. Teachers are permitted to videotape during workshop classes only.
PROPS: All props must be set on stage by the studio (not by DEA staff) within (45) seconds maximum or a 3-point deduction will be applied. Please clean up after removal of props.
TIME & PROGRAM: Students with makeup or costume changes that require additional time to prepare between performances MUST note this change on the entry form. Once the program has been issued 7 days before competition date NO CHANGES will be allowed.
TEACHER LINE UP: Upon release of an event program, all Participating Teachers will receive a Studio Line Up via e-mail or postal mail along with supporting information. Teachers are responsible for confirming its accuracy prior to the event. Unconfirmed line ups are interpreted as correct and will perform as-is.
MUSIC: One song per CD of professional quality. Teachers must use judgment when selecting music and its lyrical contents. Vulgar, derogatory or sexually suggestive words and inappropriate dance moves are cause for disqualification.
TIME LIMITS: A 2 point deduction will result for every 5 seconds of overtime.
- Solo 2 minutes 45 seconds
- Duet 2 minutes 45 seconds
- Trio 2 minutes 45 seconds
- Group 3 minutes
- Line 3 minutes
- Small Production 5 minutes
- Mid-Production 5 minutes
- Large Production 5-8 minutes
SCORING: The DEA Standard of Achievement of composite scores is an average of the individual Judges scores resulting in the following award categories:
- Titanium 298-300
- Platinum 294-297
- Gold 282-293
- Silver 264-281
- Bronze 246-263
AWARDS: Solos, Duets, and Trios in each age category will be awarded medals. Awards for Top 3 Solos, Duets and Trios will receive trophies. The Overall Highest Score (Titanium, Platinum or Gold) will receive a full scholarship to a 2012 National Workshop. Groups, Lines, and Productions in each age division will be awarded 1 medal for the routine and ribbons to all participants. Groups & Lines in each age division will be awarded trophies to the Top 3. The first place (Titanium, Platinum or Gold) winner will receive a cash award. Productions "12 and Under" & "13 and Over" age categories will receive trophies and the Highest Overall score in each will receive a cash prize.
